McLaughlin's dominance continues

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 17/04/2016

Scott McLaughlin has continued his dominance of the V8 Supercars meet on Phillip Island with another pole position.

New Zealander McLaughlin's 1:30.7018 qualifying lap was quick enough to put his Volvo at the front of the field for Sunday's 200km race.

Jamie Whincup joined him on the front row after climbing out of the gravel trap and into second place.

The six-time series champion looked to have ruined his qualifying run when he lost control of his Commodore around turn two at high speed.

Whincup said he believed McLaughlin could be caught despite his dominant performance on the weekend so far.

"We're both skinning the cat in completely different ways," Whincup told Fox Sports.

"We're quick in the middle. He's quick right at the end.

"If we can find a tenth (of a second improvement) we'll be right up there."

Ford pair Mark Winterbottom and Fabian Coulthard will start from the second row.

Shane van Gisbergen will start from sixth, Craig Lowndes ninth and Chaz Mostert 14th.

McLaughlin set a lap record in practice before winning Saturday's 120km race from pole position.
