A disastrous first day proved too hard to overcome for Kiwi 49erFX sailors Alexander Maloney and Molly Meech, who have finished fifth at the World Cup final regatta.

The Olympic silver medallists were third in the 10-boat medal race in Santander, Spain on Saturday but it wasn't enough to improve their overall position.

They finished on 67 points, 10 short of a podium place and 24 behind Brazilians Kahena Kunze and Martine Soffiatti Grael, the pair who pipped them for gold at the Rio Games last August.

It represented a decent fightback from Maloney and Meech, who were 13th out of 15 boats after the opening day.

Their boat was found to be underweight before racing began, costing them penalty points in each of the first three races.

It was the pair's first regatta working with new coach Nathan Handley, who oversaw decorated Kiwi 470 women's crew Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie.

Their next event is the Kiel Week regatta in Germany.
