Olympic silver medal-winning sailors Alex Maloney and Molly Meech have put the impact of first-day penalties behind them to make a move at the World Cup final in Spain.

The Kiwi 49erFX pair picked up a win, a seventh and a fifth in the three races off Santander on Wednesday to improve from 13th to eighth in the 15-boat fleet.

Their scores were affected in all three races on day one after officials found their boat was underweight at pre-race measuring.

Maloney and Meech, who were surprised by the finding, had added the required weight but still had 50 per cent added to their scores on Tuesday.

The pair returned to full-time training about two months ago, following an extended break after narrowly missing out on gold at the Rio Olympics last August.

Rio champions Kahena Kunze and Martine Soffiatti Grael are second behind British leaders Charlotte Dobson and Saski Tidey.

The only other Kiwi crew in Santander are 49er class sailors Josh Porebski and Trent Rippey, who are seventh.
