Kiwi 49erFX sailors Alex Maloney and Molly Meech enjoyed their best day at the World Cup final regatta in Spain to climb two places to fifth.

The Olympic silver medallists produced one race win and two second placings in Santander, injecting life into a campaign spoiled by heavy penalties on day one for presenting an underweight boat.

Maloney and Meech have accrued 61 net points, placing them 14 points outside the top three with a full day of racing to come ahead of the double-points medal race.

Brazilian Olympic champions Kahena Kunze and Martine Soffiatti Grael lead on 35 points.

The only other Kiwi crew in Santander are 49er class sailors Josh Porebski and Trent Rippey, who remain eighth overall.
