Silver medallists Alex Maloney and Molly Meech have set sail for another four-year Olympic campaign in the 49erFX class.

After an extended break following their thrilling runners-up campaign at the Rio Games, the pair have decided to throw their efforts into targeting Tokyo in 2020.

"We had a bit of time to switch off and really enjoy a break because we have both been sailing for going on 10-12 years consistently," Meech said.

"We both realised we had so much fun last time around. This time we're aiming for gold."

The former world champions came within a whisker of victory in Rio last August, pipped on the line in a breakneck final leg by Brazilians Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze.

The duo will link with a new coach, Nathan Handley, who oversaw decorated 470 women Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie.

Handley, who had a brief stint with Meech and Maloney in 2013, believes he can add value to their partnership.

"It has been impressive to see how much they have grown in the sport and are clearly doing a great job as it is but, looking from the outside, they need to become more consistent," he said.

"Even last season they had a rollercoaster ride before finishing awesomely at the Olympics."

The world championships in Portugal in August will be the pair's chief target this year.
