Meech steady at Laser world champs

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 15/05/2016

Olympic-bound New Zealand sailor Sam Meech was solid on the fourth day of the Laser world championship in Mexico to sit just outside the top-10 after the qualifying phase.

Meech placed third and eighth in the two races on Sunday at Nayarit to be 11th on 50 points.

He comfortably qualifies for the finals series raced over the final three days, along with compatriot Andy Maloney (81 points), who finished 20th in the 112-strong field.

Meech was last week named to represent New Zealand in the class at the Rio Olympics, seeing off a strong challenge from Maloney.

Defending world champion Nick Thompson of Great Britain (16 points) leads the field from Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Bernaz (21).
