Police are hunting up to four men after a 30-year-old woman was found dead at a house in Upper Hutt.

Her body was found by police after they were called to a disturbance at a house in Ward Street, Trentham early on Saturday. They say the woman had been assaulted with a weapon.

"We understand these males were at the victim's address and were heard shouting and seen running from the address," says Detective Senior Sergeant Warwick McKee.

He urged the three or four men who were at the address when the assault took place to come forward.

"These men who were at the victim's address will be known in the community and information on who they are and where they can be found is needed to help resolve the investigation," Det Snr Sgt McKee said.

Police had cordoned off the house, 20 investigators were working on the case, a scene examination was under way and they were speaking to a number of witnesses in the street, he said.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out on the body on Sunday.
