A national commemoration will take place to mark the loss of 700 New Zealand troops in the Battle of Messines in 1917.

On Wednesday, exactly 100 years since the battle on June 7, a ceremony will be streamed live on Facebook from 11am from inside the Hall of Memories in Wellington.

New Zealand was one of 12 divisions to take part in the battle and 700 Kiwis died while another 3000 were wounded.

Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy will attend two services in Belgium while Veterans' Affairs Minister David Bennett will attend the Wellington ceremony.
