A man chased by police and arrested after a suspicious Auckland house fire has been charged with a series of drug offences.

A 49-year-old North Shore man is still in Middlemore Hospital being treated for burns to his hands and arms following the fire in suburban Milford on Wednesday afternoon.

Police now say he has been charged with six offences, including possession for supply and manufacturing of methamphetamine, along with possession of precursors, equipment and criminal nuisance.

They say a bedside hearing will be held at the hospital.

Emergency services were alerted at 5.40pm on Wednesday to smoke coming from the garage of the house in Inga Road.

Officers at the scene and a member of the public who tried to help put out the fire had to be decontaminated.

An unwell dog at the house was taken by animal control officers for treatment.
