A government minister is on the lookout for data-savvy Kiwis.

Land Information Minister Louise Upston says she's offering a unique opportunity through the first Open Data Fellowships in New Zealand.

One is with her department and the other is with Wellington City Council.

"We have a wealth of data but its potential will only be realised if we open it up and bring some of our finest techie talent in-house," she said on Thursday.

"The application process allows you to identify a local problem you'd like to solve by using data that already exists but just needs to be collected and presented in a way that's useful to people in their everyday lives."

She says the scheme operates in other countries and there are many success stories.
