Ministers give councils a hurry up

Ministers have told councils interested in getting some of its $1 billion housing infrastructure fund to put in final proposals by March 31.

The fund is open to councils with high population growth to help them put in roads, drains and water supplies so that housing developments can go ahead.

Building and Housing Minister Nick Smith says the fund could potentially support about 50,000 new dwellings and he wants councils to be "more ambitious" in their final proposals.

Infrastructure Minister Steven Joyce says only a small number of the 17 proposals received through the expression of interest phase would result in projects being advanced earlier than previously planned by the councils.
