A Chinese tourist who has not been seen since she left her Auckland hotel room almost a week ago is reported to have been in contact with her family back home.

Family members of Ling Fang Mai have been in touch with New Zealand police on Tuesday to advise that she phoned them overnight to say she was okay.

However, Detective Inspector Aaron Pascoe says police still have concerns for her and want to speak to her in person to confirm that she is alright.

The 42-year-old came to New Zealand last Wednesday as part of a tour group and told a room-mate in her Parnell hotel that night that she was going for a walk.

But she didn't return and she didn't show up for the flight when the rest of the group left for Australia on Friday night.

Police believe she is still in New Zealand and Det Inspector Aaron Pascoe says they are keeping an open mind as to where she could be and why she didn't return to the tour party.
