Police believe a man's body found washed up north-west of Auckland is that of a swimmer who went missing from Piha Beach on Saturday.

A member of the public alerted authorities to the body after discovering him on Muriwai Beach on Wednesday.

"No formal identification has taken place, however, we believe it is the body of a 24-year-old man who went missing on Saturday while swimming at Piha Beach," police said in a statement.

Authorities are currently recovering the body with a formal identification and post-mortem to be carried out on Thursday.

Emergency services had earlier launched an unsuccessful search and rescue mission on Saturday to locate the missing swimmer.
