A man found dead in Wellington's Karaka Bay is a swimmer missing since Thursday, police have confirmed.

A member of the public reported finding the body near Seatoun about 7am on Saturday.

Police have confirmed it as that of a 19-year-old local man who went missing while swimming with friends in the Hutt River near Belmont School on Thursday night.

The death has been referred to the coroner.

Earlier, police said the group had been swimming in a deep section of the river, with unpredictable currents.

At the time, it was swollen due to heavy rain, Sergeant Anthony Harmer said.

Wellington Land Search & Rescue, the Hutt Community Emergency Response Team, Upper Hutt Community Rescue, the Coast Guard, Wellington Harbour Rangers and the Fire Service were involved in the search of the river and Wellington Harbour.

Police have declined to name the man yet and say his family has been notified.
