The body of a missing Taupo man has been found in a forest near his home following a three-day search.

Alan Pritchard, 78, was found by search and rescue teams just before midday on Sunday, police say.

"We're really sad that we didn't find Mr Pritchard alive but we are glad we can return him to his family," said Senior Constable Barry Shepherd.

Mr Pritchard, who had Alzheimer's, was last seen at the gate of his lifestyle block in Bonshaw Park, east of Taupo, on Thursday morning.

A helicopter, police dogs, Civil Defence, firefighters and LandSAR volunteers from as far away as Waihi and the Hawke's Bay took part in the search.
