A man missing off the Tauranga coast since Tuesday when his boat was found upturned has been named.

Police believe 39-year-old Te Awamutu farmer Karl Earwaker had a tragic accident before his 5.6m fibreglass pleasure boat, named Optimist, was seen floating upside down two nautical miles south of Mayor Island.

Air and sea teams hunting for signs of Mr Earwaker resumed their search at first light on Thursday assisted by the man's family.

On Thursday afternoon, the Police Dive Squad and Navy will also begin a sea floor search in the same area.

Mr Earwaker's stricken boat was first discovered earlier this week by a spotter plane pilot with police saying they do not yet know why it had capsized.
