A man has been arrested over the kidnapping a Timaru woman.

Police say Nicole Smith, who was reported missing on Wednesday, was found safe and well on a rural road by a member of the public 20 kilometres west of Timaru at about 5am on Thursday.

They had expressed fears for Ms Smith's safety and were calling for sightings of her or her husband, George David Henry Smith, who they said may have been armed.

A 35-year-old man was arrested without incident by Armed Offenders Squad officers at about 7am, police said.

He will be facing charges of kidnapping and breaching a protection order.

"Our investigation will continue into the exact circumstances of the incident," said Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney.

Ms Smith, also known as Nicole Brown, is now receiving support from police.
