A Canadian man who sparked a search of the Rimutakas has turned up staying with a friend in Upper Hutt.

Timo Aason's car was found close to the Rimutaka Incline track on Monday and by Friday a search and rescue crew began looking for him, concerned about dropping temperatures.

On Sunday, police said the 48-year-old had been found safe and well.

"Mr Aason had walked the Rimutaka incline through to Upper Hutt where he was staying with a friend," they said in a statement.

Car issues meant he had been unable to return and collect his own vehicle.
