A New Zealand gang member who works as a debt collector in Melbourne allegedly threatened to cut off the head of a business owner while holding him down next to a saw.

Mongrel Mob member Timoti Kapene Te Amo, 46, appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Friday accused of threatening to kill a stone mason and holding him against his will unless he paid $32,000.

The stone mason had employed the New Zealand citizen and his son as debt collectors before the men allegedly assaulted him on March 30 and demanded money.
