In-form Aaron Mooy played provider as Tommy Smith scored the all-important goal to ensure Huddersfield Town beat Aston Villa 1-0 to keep pace with the leaders in the English Championship.

The Socceroo provided the telling pass for stand-in skipper Smith who drilled home his fourth goal of the season as Huddersfield hit back after a morale-sapping defeat to leaders Newcastle on Saturday.

The win ensured Huddersfield kept the pressure on second-placed Brighton, who beat bottom-club Rotherham 2-0, for the second and automatic promotion spot to the EPL.

The physical encounter was marked by a flurry of yellow cards which included bookings for Mooy and his national team skipper Mile Jedinak, who was prominent in Villa's line-up.

Villa were on the rise after three successive victories and boss Steve Bruce looked set to inflict more damage on his former club's hopes of automatic promotion.

Town, only beaten twice in the previous 16 league games, were far from their best but they hung in to secure a precious three points.

Meanwhile leaders Newcastle dropped two points in the promotion race in an entertaining 0-0 draw at fellow promotion chasers Reading.

Newcastle, now unbeaten in 11 league matches, had the better of the first half but Reading improved after the break.
