The number of children in care in December last year increased by six per cent compared with the same month in 2015, Child, Youth and Families latest data shows.

It went up from 5139 to 5453, prompting the Greens to question whether New Zealand is a great place to be a child.

The figures have been published on CYF's website without comment.

"The record number of kids in CYF care shows we are going the wrong way," said the Greens' Jan Logie.

"We like to think Aotearoa is a great place to raise children, but is it a great place to be a child?"

Ms Logie says CYF is having to pick up the pieces of a society that is struggling to get by.

CYF is in the throes of a major restructure as it becomes the Ministry for Vulnerable Children.

Ms Logie says that so far there's been no evidence the ministry will have the resources to deal with the caseload.
