More children to learn Asian languages

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 30/08/2016

Hundreds more children will be able to learn Asian languages now that 63 schools are being funded to run new or expanded programmes.

Education Minister Hekia Parata says the schools successfully applied for funding from the contestable $10 million that was set aside for Asian language learning.

They're being given $2.36m for their programmes.

"Overall there are now 203 schools, from Southland to Tai Tokerau, receiving support for Mandarin, Japanese or Korean language programmes," Ms Parata said on Tuesday.

It's part of the drive to encourage young people to be "truly global citizens".
