More money for the justice sector

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 3/02/2017

The rollout of more police on the beat is expected to put pressure on the justice sector, so it's getting an extra $115 million to help it cope over the next four years.

Prime Minister Bill English on Thursday announced a $503m Safer Communities package that will deliver 1125 police over four years, 880 of them sworn officers.

Justice Minister Amy Adams says that will inevitably put pressure on courts and prisons.

Justice will receive $51m and Corrections $64m.

The money, which is part of the $503m, will provide:

* $64m for Corrections' rehabilitation and reintergration programmes, and more staff

* A $16m increase in legal aid

* $21m to support District Courts to handle more cases

* $9m for more judges.
