Police have increased school patrols in west Auckland as they continue to investigate the abduction and sexual assault of an 11-year-old boy.

The boy was abducted, assaulted and dropped off by a man on November 17 while walking from the local train station in the suburb of Ranui.

Waitakere Area Commander Inspector Scott Webb assured west Auckland community members police had increased patrols around schools in the Swanson and Ranui suburbs.

"(We) are making sure our staff continue to be highly visible across the district," he said.

Insp Webb thanked the public for making dozens of calls to police with information about the incident but said he was not in a position to provide an update.

"Enquires are on-going. We are dealing with a highly sensitive matter and it may take some time to complete formal interviews," he said.

"We have received numerous phone calls in the last week however we are still appealing for any sightings of a grey van, the boy and anyone acting suspiciously in the vicinity of Metcalf Rd and Swanson Rd at about 4.15pm last Thursday."

"Any smart phone footage or CCTV footage from the area last Thursday would also be valuable."
