A large number of stores in the lower North Island's biggest mall are expected to be welcoming customers again by Friday.

Queensgate Shopping Centre in Lower Hutt was closed after last week's 7.8-magnitude earthquake as engineers carried out assessments.

At the beginning of this week, only six of the 180 stores had reopened.

However, spokesman Rod MacKenzie says more than 70 retailers are expected to be back in business by Friday and shoppers will be able to use more than 590 car parks.

He says engineers and construction specialists are carrying out further work as they look at a range of options to return the mall to full operation.
