More spring snow is on the way for southern parts of the country after an unseasonal dump hit central Otago this week.

The MetService is warning the snow level will lower to about 500m in inland Otago and Canterbury early on Friday with some lower valleys expected to also get a dusting as a cold front moves in.

Forecasters are not certain about how much will fall, but some areas above 800m in central Otago and the Mackenzie Country could expect up to 15cm from midnight Thursday through to mid-morning on Friday.

There is also a snow warning for the Milford Road.

Snow blanketed Queenstown and surrounding areas on Wednesday, cutting power to parts of the region.
