More students enrol in science subjects

There has been a significant increase in the number of New Zealand students enrolling for qualifications in science, technology, engineering and maths, a new report shows.

Students enrolled in those subjects reached an all-time high of more than 11,500 last year, a 44 per cent increase on 2008, the Ministry of Education report shows.

The figures are for domestic students, it doesn't count foreign students who come here to study.

Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce says the government's strategy is focused on getting industries the skills they need, and he's pleased with the outcome.

"It's great to see so many students engaged in areas where they're likely to head into solid, well-paying careers where demand is high and likely to continue to grow," he said.

"We need these trends to continue so we better match New Zealanders' skill mix with the emerging needs of our industries."
