Icy roads have caused crashes in the South Island, and more wild weather is on the way.

Drivers in the Central Otago Lakes area were warned to take care as icy roads caused chaos on Wednesday morning, and police warned residents to avoid unnecessary travel until roads thawed.

Further north, State Highway 6 at Spooners Range, south of Nelson, has been closed due to severe ice.

A motorcyclist crashed in the area and a car rolled in the Motueka Valley, but no one was injured in either accident, a St John Ambulance spokesman said.

MetService has issued a severe weather warning for the West Coast and the Tararua Range.

A front crossing the South Island on Wednesday night will bring heavy rain to both areas, which could cause rivers to rise rapidly and could cause slips and hazardous driving conditions, the forecaster says.

Gales are also forecast for Wellington overnight that could be strong enough to lift roofs and damage trees.
