The Jetstar aircraft was on its way down into Wellington airport in New Zealand as the weather phenomenon hit.

A passenger onboard filmed out of the window showing the rain and wind battering the aircraft as nervous families sat in their seats.

Kristy Carstairs, who recorded the video, told the Daily Mail Australia: "I work in tourism.

"I'm not a nervous flyer, but my heart was in my throat."

"It’s school holidays, there were quite a few kids on the plane, who were probably the most upset."

As the clip shows the travellers showed their appreciation on the successful touch down by giving their captain a huge round of applause and cheer.

Shortly after the Jetstar plane landed, the capital's airport tweeted to say the weather was causing delays.

But it was soon business as usual, as a later Instagram post revealed a beautiful blue sky had returned and the airport was running as normal.
