A motorcyclist who died in the eastern Bay of Plenty was deliberately hit by the driver of the car that killed him, investigators say.

Police say they upgraded the investigation into Don Henry Turei Junior's death to a homicide investigation.

Turei Junior, 38, was hit by a Honday Odyssey while riding his motorbike with his brother to a wedding reception.

The white Honda then sped off and was found near the banks of the Raukokore River near Te Kaha, a short distance from where Turei Junior was struck.

Detective Inspector Lew Warner says witness accounts and forensic examinations "clearly show this was a deliberate act".

"If you even suspect you might know who did this, do the right thing and tell us what you know," he said.
