Road users are being urged to watch out for motorcyclists on highways in the South Island as bikers head to the 37th Annual Brass Monkey Rally.

About 1500 bikers gather annually at Idaburn Dam at Oturehua in Central Otago to celebrate motorcycling in one of New Zealand's coldest places.

They enjoy a large bonfire built by a local farmer, a live band, and events and displays.

Organisers warn participants to be prepared for winter riding conditions, saying "there are no bold old motorcyclists".

On Friday the New Zealand Transport Agency warned road users to be aware of the event and to share the road.

The temperature is forecast to fall to minus 3C overnight in Oturehua with a high of 8C on Saturday.

Highways affected:

SH1 - Timaru to Invercargill

SH6 - Invercargill to Cromwell

SH8 - Timaru to Milton

SH85 - Palmerston to Alexandra

SH87 - Mosgiel to Kyeburn

SH90 - Raes Junction to McNab

SH93 - Mataura to Clinton.
