Maori Party co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell says more has to be done to stop domestic violence and he's decided on a direct role.

Mr Flavell is a White Ribbon ambassador and a member of the government's ministerial group on family violence.

"As ministers we tend to get bogged down my the multitudes of papers, briefings and the machine that is parliament," he said on Friday.

"I'll be doing everything I can to get out to communities to ask them directly what's happening and what I can do to help."

Mr Flavell says he's starting in the Eastern Bay of Plenty where he'll be meeting families, community leaders and service providers.
