Actor-comedian Alan Young, who played the amiable straight man to a talking horse in the 1960s sitcom Mr Ed, has died aged 96.

The English-born, Canadian-educated Young died on Thursday, according to Jaime Larkin, spokeswoman for the Motion Picture and Television Home said on Friday.

Young had lived in the retirement community in California for four years. His children were with him when he died peacefully of natural causes, she said.

In the American series, Young played Wilbur Post, who kept a horse - Mr Ed - in his suburban stable, who would speak only to Wilbur.

Young also voiced many animated characters, including Scrooge McDuck, and guested on dozens of TV shows.
