Mount Maunganui have been crowned overall club champions at the national surf lifesaving championships for a fifth successive year.

The Bay of Plenty club cleared away on the opening day in Christchurch on Thursday and never looked like relinquishing the lead.

Auckland's Mairangi Bay were second, heading off Gisborne club Waikanae.

New Zealand Black Fins Cory Taylor and Danielle McKenzie were the individual stars.

Gisborne's Taylor took out the men's open ironman and ski race finals while McKenzie also achieved the same double in the women's field for Mairangi Bay. McKenzie also won the board race and was second in the swim-run.
