Seven candidates are contesting the seat, left vacant by Labour's Phil Goff who was elected as Auckland's mayor in October.

It has been hotly contested by Labour's Michael Wood, and Parmjeet Parmar for the National Party.

The election will be held on December 3.

"It's important to vote in advance if you can't get to a voting place in the Mt Roskill electorate ... as there will be no voting places open outside the Mt Roskill electorate on election day," chief electoral officer Robert Perden said.

But anyone can vote early without a reason, he said.

Three advance voting locations are open throughout the electorate.
