Mt Roskill result as expected: PM

Prime Minister John Key is not reading much into Labour's win in the Mt Roskill by-election.

Michael Wood won the seat with a resounding defeat of National's Parmjeet Parmar.

He polled 11,170 votes against her 4652 amid low voter turnout in the Auckland electorate on Saturday.

But Mr Key said the result was largely as expected and wasn't a sign for next year's general election.

"I don't think it changes anything. They needed to win, they got the win," he told the Paul Henry show.

He said National voters knew the party was not going to win the electorate seat so they stayed at home with the just 35 per cent of eligible voters casting their vote.

Mr Key said recent nationwide polls giving Labour 28 per cent and then 23 per cent had been reflected in its own internal polling and was confident that would be reflected in a general election.

Mt Roskill was a safe Labour seat - Phil Goff held it with a majority of more than 8000 in the last general election before he stood down after winning the Auckland mayoralty.
