Mt Ruapehu cools its jets

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 5/07/2016

The alert level for Mt Ruapehu has been lowered to minor levels of volcanic unrest, and its ski slopes are open for business.

Government scientists lifted the volcanic alert level in May to reflect the rise in gas output from the crater lake, a high lake temperature and continued seismic activity.

It has been lowered from moderate to high levels of unrest to minor levels.

Volcanologists monitoring the site say the temperature of the crater lake has decreased from 46C to 23C.

Mr Ruapehu ski field has opened its beginner ski areas following a weekend of cold temperatures and more than 60 hours of snowmaking.

However they say there isn't yet enough snow to open intermediate and advanced slopes.
