A man has been charged with the murder of a Nomad's associate who's been missing for almost a year.

Palmiro MacDonald, 36, went missing on March 23, 2016, and his remains were found in the Mangahao Dam area of the Tararua Foothills on October 9.

A 28-year-old man has been charged with his murder and is due to appear in the Palmerston North District Court on Tuesday afternoon.

Mr MacDonald was a Nomads associate and was the subject of a large scale investigation.

"Today is a significant moment in what has been an extensive and complex inquiry and we are glad to finally be able to hold somebody to account," Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Baskett said.

"We hope that this arrest will bring a sense of relief to Palmiro's whanau and friends."
