Foreign Minister Murray McCully is on his way to New York for a meeting with incoming UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

He'll also be attending Security Council meetings as New Zealand's two-year membership draws to a close.

"We are focused on working right up to the last day," Mr McCully said before he left.

""I will participate in the quarterly open debate on the Middle East, which will include a briefing from outgoing Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and a ministerial level debate on non-proliferation."

Mr McCully says his visit is about ensuring New Zealand is well positioned to continue pushing for top-level UN reform.
