Gaylene Preston's documentary that follows a year in the life of New Zealand politician Helen Clark is about to have its world premiere in Sydney.

The former New Zealand prime minister tweeted on Saturday: "arrived #Sydney 4 @sydfilmfest premiere of "My Year With Helen" made by Gaylene Preston w/support @NZFilmCommissh @NZonAir & private funders".

The world premiere of My Year with Helen is at Sydney's State Theatre on Saturday, as part of the Sydney Film Festival.

During filming Ms Clark was head of the United Nations Development Programme, and was bidding to become the UN's first female Secretary-General. She was unsuccessful in the bid.

Before taking her UN appointment, Ms Clark was prime minister of New Zealand for nine years from 1999 to 2008.

Preston was keen to capture the empowering character of the woman ranked by Forbes magazine among the 25 most powerful in the world.

"Helen is a formidable woman and leader, and I'm honoured she's given my team access to tell this story," Preston has said.

The New Zealand premiere is next month as part of the NZ International Film Festival.

Preston is an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit for services to the film industry.

Her most recent feature film Home by Christmas won audience accolades at Sydney and London film festivals.
