Mystics netball head Julie Paterson is switching sports to become the chief executive of Tennis New Zealand.

Paterson has been at the helm of Netball Northern Zone and the Mystics for the past five years, and says she's looking forward to a new challenge.

She says she was attracted to the Tennis NZ role because of the organisation's commitment to a new national strategy.

"Tennis is a high participation sport in New Zealand and there are a lot of opportunities to continue to raise the profile of the game at both the performance level and grassroots," she said.

She will start at Tennis NZ on July 24.
