Sevilla were forced to settle for a scoreless draw at home to Villareal after Samir Nasri missed a penalty shortly after the break.

Sevilla failed to convert a penalty as they were held 0-0 by Villarreal. Goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo was man of the match after saving the spot-kick from Samir Nasri after Vitolo was brought down in the box five minutes into the second half.

The visiting keeper also saved well from Vicente Iborra, and Wissam Ben Yedder had a goal ruled out for offside.

It was the first time in 28 league games that Sevilla had failed to score at home.

"A point is no good to us really. But we have to accept it and keep working hard," Sevilla defender Adil Rami said.

"We dominated the game but we could not take our chances," added manager Jorge Sampaoli.

"They played an extremely defensive game; we have dropped two points we deserve to pick-up."

The draw leaves Sevilla third, three points behind leaders Real Madrid and two behind Barcelona.

They are now only four clear of Atletico Madrid while Villarreal remain fifth.

Later Sunday Sporting Gijon were beaten 4-2 at home by Alaves.

It was their sixth defeat in their last seven games and they remain in the relegation zone five points from safety.

Alaves rested players ahead of Wednesday's Copa del Rey second leg but goals from Ruben Sobrino, Christian Santos, Edgar Mendez and Alexis Ruano still gave them an easy win.

Real Madrid had their game away at Celta Vigo on Sunday called off after Vigo's stadium suffered structural damage in a storm the previous day.
