The gloves came off in parliament as, for the first time, National MPs launched an attack on Labour's recently-elected deputy leader Jacinda Ardern.

Until Wednesday Ardern had been left alone to generate positive publicity - that ended during the general debate on Wednesday.

Nikki Kaye, who narrowly beat Ms Ardern in Auckland Central in 2014, said Labour's choice of deputy leader had been a "cosmetic facelift" and she had a problem thinking of anything useful Ms Ardern had done during her time in parliament.

She said Ms Ardern had failed her generation and suggested all she was good for was being a face on a billboard.

Other MPs, including Conservation Minister Maggie Barry, also had a go at Ardern's record in parliament.

Labour's veteran MP Ruth Dyson said it would do them no good if they "went into the gutter" because it turned people off.
