Nearly $15m more for apprenticeships

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 19/05/2016

Next week's budget will put an extra $14.4 million into apprenticeship training.

Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce says demand for apprenticeships has been growing since the 2013 industry training reforms.

The money will be spread over four years and will help support another 5500 apprentices by 2020, he says.

"Last year the number of new starts for apprenticeships like carpentry, plumbing and electrical engineering were at the highest levels in nearly a decade," Mr Joyce said on Thursday.

"There were more than 42,000 people enrolled in apprenticeships in 2015.

"We're keen to stay on this roll."
