Nelson residents and tourists are set to take part in historic re-enactments, guided history tours and even a community cricket game to celebrate 175 years since Europeans arrived.

With the New Zealand Company in London planning the settlement of Nelson, the first vessel, The Fifeshire, landed on January 30, 1842.

Now the occasion is celebrated annually on January 30 as Nelson Anniversary Day.

"We are one of the oldest cities in New Zealand," Nelson City Council's Gaile Noonan says.

"This is about celebrating our history, teaching our young ones about our city and our heritage, and recognising how lucky we are to call Nelson home."

The council said preparations were well under way with families and tourists able to begin planning which activities they would like to attend.

Attractions on the day include actors recreating different periods in Nelson's history, a guided tour of the historic cemetery and a cricket match against visitors, The Cricketers Club of New South Wales.
