Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have recorded events following a double-fatal crash near Nelson.

Two people were killed in the three-vehicle crash, reportedly involving a truck and a 4WD towing a caravan, on the Coastal Highway, State Highway 60, on Monday morning.

On Tuesday, police named one of the victims as Stephen Anthony Jayes, 41, of Nelson.

They say they are trying to piece together what happened at what was a "very challenging" accident scene.

They want to hear from any fresh witnesses who may have seen the crash.

"We would also like to view any footage that members of the public may have taken before emergency services have arrived," said Senior Sergeant Blair Hall.

Five others were injured in the crash.
