The death of a Nelson man whose body was found on a boat is being treated as a homicide.

The body of 55-year-old local man John Murray Morton was discovered in the back of a white boat at Nelson Haven on Thursday morning.

He died overnight on Wednesday.

Police say a post-mortem examination carried out on Saturday has confirmed Mr Morton's death is a homicide.

"The number and nature of Mr Morton's injuries suggest a very violent attack and the investigation team is determined to piece together exactly what happened," Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Johnston said.

"Extra resources are being brought in from other police districts and the Nelson team will be joined by further investigators on Monday."

Police want to hear from anyone who uses the reserve area where the boats are moored or may have recently taken photos of it.

"I believe people in the Nelson community may hold the keys to unlock this mystery and I urge anyone with information about what happened to Mr Morton to come forward and help us hold to account the person or persons responsible for this senseless crime," Det Snr Sgt Johnston said.
