Nelson man jailed over Facebook video

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 19/04/2016

A Nelson man has been handed an 11-month jail sentence for sending a woman a "disturbing" sexual video on Facebook.

Aaron Stephen Tamihana, 28, was this week handed the sentence in Nelson District Court following a prosecution under the Harmful Digital Communications Act, which only came into force last year.

Police say Tamihana had sent the woman a disturbing video of a "sexual nature" in December, although they declined to provide details of the crime.

"People need to think very seriously about what they are posting in any digital media forum and if the intention is to cause harm to another person the consequences could be very serious as we have seen here," warned Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Johnston.

The details of the case have been requested from the court.

It appears to be the harshest sentence yet handed down since the new law was brought in in July last year in order to curb online bullying.

One person has already been jailed for four months and another sentenced to community work, while others are still awaiting sentencing, according to media reports.

The maximum sentence is two years' jail or a $50,000 fine.
