New apple variety set to dazzle

A new apple variety has been launched which intends to dazzle the fruit world.

The apple variety, which is a large, red, sweet apple and has taken 20 years to develop will be marketed as Dazzle.

It's expected to be one of the biggest apple variety launches since Royal Gala decades ago, and is targeted at the growing Asian markets.

"It has all the qualities which appeal to Asian consumers. It is a big, highly coloured and very sweet apple," said Fruitcraft manager, Steve Potbury.

Fruitcraft is the production and marketing collaboration between three of New Zealand's largest growers, Mr Apple, Bostock New Zealand and Freshmax, which will be in charge of Dazzle.

There are already over 100,000 trees growing the new variety, and it's predicted around 1 million cartons of the apple will be exported from New Zealand by 2028.

Plant breeders at Havelock North began breeding Dazzle through cross breeding "Sweetie" and "Scired" in 1997, and it's taken nearly two decades to perfect.
