New Argentine soccer coach Edgardo Bauza says he wants to convince superstar Lionel Messi to return to the national team.

Argentina's new soccer coach Edgardo Bauza says he wants superstar Lionel Messi to return to the national team.

"In my head I have a national team that includes Messi," Bauza told TyC Sports news portal on Tuesday.

Messi announced his retirement from Argentina's national team after they lost the Copa America final against Chile in July.

"I would like to speak to him about football, which can maybe result in him returning to the team," Bauza said.

Bauza was named new coach of Argentina's national team on Monday, replacing Gerardo Martino.

Bauza, who most recently coached at Brazilian club Sao Paulo, takes over the team at a crucial time before the 2018 World Cup in Russia, as the side sits in third place in South America qualifying.

Argentina will take on first-placed Uruguay in Buenos Aires on September 1.
